My R4i Experience: PAUL MADINA

From Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University

I came into Innov8 Hub on the 4th of March, 2024, with the mindset of having a normal training and going back to my institution afterwards. Entering the Hub, my mindset began to change from the door. I saw synergy, organizational setting and going through the different labs, one thing came to my mind: nothing is wasted.

My journey at the Research for Impact initiative has been a transformative experience, one that has not only broadened my understanding, but has also enriched my perspective on the importance of research in creating tangible impact in our society. From the onset, R4i provided a comprehensive overview of the research landscape, emphasizing the critical role that impactful research plays in addressing real-world challenges. Through engaging discussions and interactive sessions, we delved into various methodologies and frameworks aimed at maximizing the potential of research to effect positive change. The training modules are mind-blowing, something to hold onto for attitudinal change in my teaching career.

One pivotal aspect of R4i for me was the exploration of various impact pathways. Understanding how research findings can translate into making money, policy changes, community interventions, or technological innovation was eye-opening. It revealed the importance of considering diverse avenues through which research can generate meaningful impact, tailored to the unique needs of end users. In addition, R4i equipped me with practical tools and strategies for effective communication and dissemination of research findings. From crafting compelling narratives to utilizing digital platforms for broader reach, I gained valuable insights into amplifying the impact of research through effective communication strategies. I have learned, unlearned and relearned, knowing fully that no one has the monopoly of knowledge and we learn every day.

As I reflect on this journey, I am reminded of the words of Margaret Mead: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” Armed with the knowledge and inspiration gained from this training, I am eager to be part of a community of changemakers dedicated to leveraging research for positive societal impact. R4i was designed to equip me and to also pass the capacity-building on to my students with the hope of getting qualitative research and returns from the findings. This will better the economy, publications and the image of our institutions to the world at large. Watch out for the next set of students under my supervision. I am grateful to Innov8 hub and TETFund for this initiative. I also want to say a very big thank you to my institution for giving me the opportunity to partake in this life-changing training.
